Core cane is machined from the pithy centre of the rattan vine. Because it is processed it is available in many accurate sizes. It is popular for basketry and other craftwork because it is very pliable and will take stains, dyes and paints. Also, it is used as the beading for sheet cane panels. The sizes we stock are 2mm, 2.5mm, 3mm, 3.5mm, 4mm, 4.5mm, 5mm, 5.5mm, 6mm, 7mm, 8mm, 10mm and 12mm. Larger sizes of sanded poles are also available. Prices There are a number of species of canes available to supply many sizes of round cane with its skin intact. This means that the sizing is more general than core cane because variation exists within each piece of cane. For example, at each leaf node there is usually a slight change in diameter. Cane which still has its skin is stronger, but is less flexible than core cane. Smaller sizes of round cane are used for basketry. All sizes are used in cane furniture manufacture and repairs. It is also used to make hoops, whip handles, kites, sculptures, polo mallets and martial arts fighting sticks. This cane comes in a range of sizes from 5mm to 40mm. Prices Split cane is made from round cane which has been split in half. Available in sizes from about 7mm to about 16mm wide, it is used for slats and straps in cane furniture, and for making large and sturdy baskets. Be careful with split cane as the edges can be very sharp. We advise you sand the edges before use. PricesThis material is long, narrow strips of cane, usually 5-6mm wide, used mainly for strapping and binding. Binding Cane is the natural skin of the rattan. Binding Core is machined from the core from the centre of the cane. Binding Core can be easily painted or stained or dyed whereas Binding Cane is fairly impervious. Binding Cane is natural cane colour (honey colour) and Binding Core is almost white. Occasionally it's also used to make patterned seats, such as those woven in a herringbone pattern for example.
